Endometriosis care:
psychology sex therapy

What is a sexologist or sex therapist?

Sexology is a skill acquired after 3 years of state-recognized university training leading to a diploma, and is open to healthcare professionals (general practitioners, psychologists, gynecologists, psychiatrists, physiotherapists, etc.).

The sex therapist treats " visible" dysfunctions (dyspareunia, lubrication, erection, ejaculation...) as well as the psychological disorders that are often intrinsically linked (disorders of desire, arousal, marital conflicts...).

His or her job is to help patients find solutions to their sexual problems, and to answer the questions they have about their sexuality. A sex therapist addresses both the "technical" and the psychological aspects of sexuality.

Patients suffering from a chronic illness are often subject to difficulties in their sexual life. Our aim is to help patients achieve a fulfilling sexuality and a better quality of life.

What disorders does a sex therapist treat?

  • Sexual disorders:
    • desire disorders: decreased/absent libido (hypoactive desire), excess libido (hyperactive desire), fluctuating libido
    • arousal disorders: erectile dysfunction/dysfunction, lubrication disorders (vaginal dryness)
    • pleasure disorders: difficulty reaching orgasm, anorgasmia, ejaculation disorders (rapid, delayed, anejaculation)
    • dyspareunia, vulvodynia
    • vaginismus, perineal hypertonia
  • Marital problems: conflicts, communication difficulties...
  • Mood disorders: depression, bipolar disorder
  • Behavioral disorders: OCD, phobias
  • Anxiety

The role of a sex therapist psychologist

The sex therapist helps her patients to improve their well-being and quality of life in various areas: personal, sexual, professional, social, marital...
Her role is also to combat misinformation and false beliefs, which are unfortunately widespread in the field of sexuality.

Her work consists of listening, analyzing and understanding the disorders that patients may be experiencing, and adapting a therapeutic method to each patient to provide them with the best possible support, without judgment and with a sympathetic ear.

How does the consultation work?

During day hospital treatment at IFEM Endo, the patient is seen by the sex therapist psychologist, alone or as a couple, depending on her situation and wishes.

Together, they address the different areas of life affected by the pathology (social, professional, marital, sexual, family, parental, etc.).

If the patient so wishes, personalized support (individual and/or marital) over the short to medium term is offered.

In terms of therapy, the method is chosen according to the patient's disorders, experiences and personality. The approach is often systemic and integrative. It can also be cognitive-behavioral (CBT), psychodynamic, body-based, analytical...
